Getting to Know the U.S. Presidents #39: Jimmy Carter, Thirty-Ninth President
Author/illustrator Mike Venezia has been introducing children to great artists and composers for more than fifteen years. In his new series, Mike brings to life the greatest historical figures of the United States - the U.S. presidents. Once again, Mike has combined humor with history to make learning fun.rnDuring the 1980 presidential race, an uncle of Mike's actually challenged Jimmy Carter as an independent. Anderson Venezia, an aqua-culture (sea-vegetable) farmer, believed he had excellent presidential qualifications. He was a farmer, he was virtually unknown, he lacked national political experience, and he possessed a winning smile. Unfortunately, taking a cue from his opponent, Anderson designed a campaign poster that featured his smile and most successful sea crop, kelp. The memorable but disgusting image may have been the reason Anderson received less (much less) than one percent of the popular vote.
